clayton

Since spending more time in Berlin beginning mid 2007, Clayton has performed across Europe, performing at new music festivals, improvisation showcases and independent venues.

As one of the handful of genuinely visible creative double bassists in the European new and improvised music communities, Clayton has had the rare privilege to collaborate with artists spanning the full continuum of living, creative music.

He is the founder of the NOW now festival of spontaneous music, in Sydney, as well as the large-scale improvisation project ‘The Splinter Orchestra’. In Berlin he has founded the 24 piece Splitter Orchestra. In 2010. They were the first large improvising ensemble to ever perform Ferienkurse für Neue Musik Darmstadt.

His distinct approach to the bass, has helped him become one of the uniting members of a new generation of creative musicians, breaking down the lines of discourse between jazz, electro-acoustic, noise, rock and pop – and, along with a handful of others, re-defined how the musical landscape of ‘Reductionism’ might be re-interpreted in other forms of music.

His interest is in developing a personal language through improvised collaboration, critical discourse and composition research, that defies genre classification, and therefore pre-conceived notions of relevance or irrelevance.

In 2010 he began working with Barre Phillips on a biographical project on the master improviser and composer.

In 2012 he was an artist in residence at Cite Des Arts in Paris.
